Kyle Vogt has resigned as CEO of Cruise, General Motors’ autonomous vehicle unit, following the company’s recent safety recall and the loss of its license to operate in California. There is no official statement on the company’s website about the resignation itself, however the company’s head of communications, Aaron Mclear, has confirmed that Vogt resigned late Sunday night (November 19).
The news came less than a week after the Cruise board’s regularly scheduled quarterly meeting at its headquarters in San Francisco, on 14 November. During the meeting, it announced a number of steps to enhance safety and transparency, including appointing Craig Glidden to the role of chief administrative officer for Cruise; the retention of an independent expert to conduct a comprehensive safety assessment of Cruise’s safety operations and culture; and the hiring of a permanent chief safety officer.
On October 26, the company announced a pause of all of its driverless operations to allow it to examine its processes, systems and tools and improve how it operates.
